Canon Malachy Murphy died on 14th January 2011. Canon Murphy was the Parish Priest of Rasharkin from 2003 to 2009 and was greatly respected within the parish due to his enthusiasm and dedication to all aspects of his ministry especially at times of sickness and bereavement. Because of his background in education he had a special rapport with the pupils and staff of St Patricks Primary School.
Canon Murphy was a man who had great faith and humility, gave freely of his time, yet enjoyed life, he was optimistic & progressive, never forgot his roots or his family and always looked for the best in people and in life.
He overseen the construction of the new car park and entrance at the rear of St Mary's Church which has transformed the visits to both the church and the graveyard. He took great pride in the erection of the new statue of Our Lady adjacent to the site of the old church bell in the graveyard. He initiated the process for the construction of the new parish centre which has since been completed by Father Murray.
