Evening Prayer

Evening Prayer to Mary

Night has fallen dear Mother and the long day is o'er,

and before thy loved image, we are kneeling once more.

To thank you for keeping us safe through this day,

and to ask you this night to keep all evil away.

Many times have we fallen today Mother dear,

many graces neglected since last we knelt here,

would thou not in pity, our own Mother mild,

ask Jesus to pardon the sins of thy child?

We are going now to rest for our days work is done,

its hours and its moments have passed one by one.

And the God who will judge us has counted them all,

He has numbered each grace, He has counted each fall.

In His book they are written against the last day;

Oh Mother ask Jesus to wipe them away.

For one drop of His blood, which for sinners was spilt,

was sufficient to cleanse the whole world of it's guilt.

And if ere the dawn we should draw our last breath,

and the sleep that we take be the long sleep of death,

be near us dear Mother, for Jesus' dear sake,

when our souls on eternity's shore shall awake.
